This isn’t a question we like to hear… But we do.
Training is important for any business to grow and develop, especially one that can put the public at risk.
We deliver training that gives engineers time to study and be assessed on their skills giving them access to a recognised accreditation AND a CSCS card.
This is why we ask employers to ensure engineers have been WORKING ON automatic doors for at least a year.
We are audited and assessed by both CSCS and City & Guilds. And we believe our CSCS card and City & Guilds accreditation means something. So, if your staff don’t have any practical experience, we have to turn them away as we cannot give untrained engineers a CSCS card. It may sound harsh, but we want the candidates to sit the right course and at the right time, not wasting your money. Which is why we offer trainee cards to members.
“THE WORLD HAS GONE HEALTH & SAFETY MAD”
Another saying we hear from Directors and engineers who have run their automatic door company for decades!
We do understand the frustration of many members… There are businesses that have not had to worry about the Health & Safety that has come into play for the past few years. And if you’ve been doing it for this long, what can go wrong now?
Well, things have changed. There’s nothing we can do about that! All we can do is offer members the opportunity to train and show their skills. And this may be frustrating as it’s another expense to your company, but it is important that you are doing your job to the best ability, and if that means paying for training, then c’est la vie.
The public needs to be kept safe and it’s up to our members to have their staff trained to ensure this. We cannot force you BUT if anything goes wrong, we cannot help (as mentioned in our code of conduct).
“BUT IT ISN’T EVEN THE LAW”
No, the BS EN16005 is not law BUT it is an integral part of Health and Safety training to make sure people are safe and will not be injured, or even killed. Because if they are and the relevant training hasn’t been carried out, your company will be held liable. See this incident where an untrained gate engineer was sentenced for the death of a woman killed by a gate he installed.
More and more contractors and sites are looking for our CSCS card. It’s no good to have an Asbestos Awareness CSCS card when you are about to fit an automatic door anymore. Our card is SPECIFIC to automatic pedestrian doors, which is what is now being recognised across the country and promoted by CSCS.
WHAT DO YOU GET FROM THE BS EN16005 COURSE?
All the information you need on the BS EN16005 can be found here, including a booking form.
